Map of Underground Ice on Mars...

At right is a map of extensive underground water ice fields near the surface of Mars.  These ice fields are up to a kilometer thick, and are covered with rubble of various thicknesses.  The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) gathered the data used to make this map with its Shallow Radar instrument, which was designed specifically for this task.

Go, MRO, go!

The development cost of the Shallow Radar instrument was approximately 1/45th the cost of the ISS' “picture window”.  And it returns actual science data!
