On Friday night, about a mile from our house (as the crow flies), one man was murdered and another man was injured. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s story, by Michael Stetz:
The 23-year-old man shot to death in a bizarre attack Friday night has been identified as Charles Crow of Jamul.
A San Diego sheriff’s SWAT team was called in yesterday in the search for the shooter, who, while dressed in camouflage and carrying a rifle, opened fire at the SUV in which Crow was a passenger.
The Sheriff’s Department said the SWAT team had left the area late last night and that no arrest had been made.
Another passenger was wounded, but not seriously, in the shooting, which took place near Skyline Truck Trail and Wisecarver Truck Trail in Jamul.
At the time of the attack, Crow and two others were looking for a piece of property that was for sale, authorities said.
They passed a Ford pickup while driving. After turning around, they again came upon the truck.
This time, a man got out of the truck and went to the center of the highway. He raised a rifle and fired several shots, killing Crow.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect is a white man with gray hair and an unshaven face. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 140 and 160 pounds. He was wearing a green camouflage jacket, pants and a floppy brimmed hat.
The truck is believed to be a white Ford F-250 pickup.
Authorities have no motive for the killing.
This is rather bizarre, wouldn’t you say? Every possible explanation I can think of is odd. It could be a completely random crazed shooter with a very weird modus operandi. Or, it could be that the surviving occupants of the vehicle are lying through their teeth, and there actually is some connection to the victim, there is an identifiable motive for the killing, and the murderer chased them down into the cul-de-sac that Wisecarver Road forms. Or it could be that the killer was actually after someone else, and shot Charles Crow by mistake. But all of these possibilities seem quite unlikely!
I sure hope the police can get a handle on this one sometime soon. It’s been over 24 hours now, and there have been no announcements of progress…

The news reports are wrong, they wern’t out looking for property, they were just out offroading and were not on anyines property. There are alot of “Tweekers” robbing peoples houses in Jamul and thats horrible. If some one is on your property you have a right to detain them untill the police arrive or shoot if they harm or treaten you, but you don’t go gun someone down on the public road. They were fearing for there lives. Chuck was already gone when the engine gave out on Skyline and they jumped out into the bushes hiding from this mad man. This area is an off roaders paradise. The majority of Wisecarver Truck trail however, has been gated off by new owners of a portion of that land. Everyone i have talked to says this guy was a certified nutcase and remember he does have a criminal past.

The other story is that they were “Off Roading”, everyone who lives in the country knows that you don’t go on other people’s property unless you have their permission.

ReplyDeleteWho knows what really happened that night? For all we know, the guy who shot Chuck was scared of them and reacted to a perceived threat when he shot at the vehicle. I mean, think about it. Some loud, drunk, rowdy kids in a SUV trespass onto your property and you go out to tell them to get the hell out of there and you see that there are several guys in the vehicle and you’re by yourself, you might over-react out of fear. I’m sure Chuck and his friends were probably belligerant and obnoxious when told they needed to leave. Likely, the guy started shooting when they attempted to get out to give him an ass-kicking for daring to tell them they couldn’t be on the road.

ReplyDeleteFolks, a little logic is certainly in order (rather, desperate need) here. There is NO evidence that the young men got out of their vehicle (which was ventilated about as badly as Bonnie and Clyde’s). They had no weapons, and there is no preliminary evidence that they were in the act of stealing [although, that - in itself - is absolutely no justification - even in a backward state like Texas - for shooting at a vehicle and/or its occupants (much less, an errant and folly TEN or more times)]. It is only speculative to predict that this shooter is a backward, Bungalow Bill ('I don’t dial 911, I dial 3-5-7') type, but I would be shocked if he wasn’t every bit the worst of the (Montana Militia?) 'mountain man' stereotype with an elevator that hasn’t reached the top floors in a long time. If you are the least bit protective of this precious freedom that we have, you don’t even chamber a round in your weapon until your life is being gravely threatened. And, you keep going - away from trouble (unlike Orlosky, who turned around, and was apparently waiting to ambush them on their way back out of that 'dead' end). It sounds like this numbskull (who is now out on bail, heaven help us) carried artillery in his vehicle wherever he went, and was vigilant about being at-the-ready to confront anyone who (he perceived in his pea brain to have) crossed his path. It could have happened to any one of us (who - unwittingly - might easily make a wrong turn in the maze of meadering roads and trails that cut through the (out)back country. When I lived in Descanso, I had numerous people drive up my 1/4 mile long driveway by mistake (probably thinking it was a dirt road). Nobody ever had to run with their lives (or be witness to menacing gestures, much less an armed response). This MURDER could not possibly be the act of a (least bit) civilized person. Furthermore, it occurred at 8:30 or so in the evening, not 3:30 in the wee hours of the morning! My heartfelt sympathies go out to all of his victims, because there is no shortage of them (including his likely meek, and abused, wife) in this senseless act of outrageous violence. And please excuse my editorializing, in the extremely unlikely event it turns out to be unfounded…
