An interesting new service went live yesterday here in San Diego County: an interactive crime map. And miracle of miracles (considering that it’s a government effort), the thing actually works quite nicely.
The image at right shows the zip code where I live, and the crime incidents of the past three months. There are simple tools available to zoom and pan the map, and very basic information on each incident listed.
After generating the map above, I spent some time looking at other areas in the county, to see how our area compares. Conclusion: I live where the angels live. Within a one mile radius of my home there wasn’t a single crime report in the past 90 days — but just about anywhere else in the county would find somewhere between a dozen and hundreds of reports.
I think I’ll just stay home.
