For a couple of years now, I've had "A Marine's Journal," written by Cpl. Brian Taylor, posted on my personal web site. That journal, originally published in the Wall Street Journal, was my best source of information about what it was like for the troops on the ground in the early days of the Iraq war. Cpl. Taylor's journal provided a gritty, obviously informed, and eloquent view of the Iraq war from a foot-soldier's perspective. It was great, and because of that, I've left it permanently posted on my site, where it has become one of the most popular areas for visitors.
So you can imagine my delight to recieve emails the other day, first from Brian's brother Doug, and then from Brian himself. Brian and his family are pictured at right (click on the photo for a larger view), on the day of his return and reunion, which happened to be at Camp Pendleton, just north of where I live. I wish I could have been there to shake his hand and to say "Thank you" in person. This will have to do:
Thank you, Brian, for your service. And for that journal.
Brian has a family website up that includes a section on Operation Iraqi Freedom. This page includes a link to a page full of excellent and fascinating photographs — don't miss it. Brian has given me permission to use these photos, so you'll see some of them here as well.
